Biography

I’m John Kirriemuir and I come from a small village in Worcestershire. Education resulted in a degree (statistics and computer science) from the University of Hertfordshire, and a masters degree (data engineering) from Keele University. I’ve passed a number of research methods and technology evaluation courses at the universities of Sheffield Bristol and the IT University of Copenhagen.

On getting my first library card at age 5, I became a heavy user of libraries and other information services. I’ve been a researcher in a library school, and carried out research and consultancy for a number of digital library projects and services in the academic and health sectors. For several years I was the web editor for Ariadne, a publicity officer for eLib (the Electronic Libraries Programme) and the information officer for UKOLN. I’ve also been the manager of a medical digital library service at the University of Nottingham, and research coordinator of a digital library research centre at the University of Strathclyde.

Often, when a new online technology emerges, it interests me to experiment with it to find any practical application for teaching, education or libraries. Home alternates between Birmingham (UK), midwest USA and Scandinavia. Publications include articles in various library, gaming and education publications. Spare time is spent using libraries and games. I get to speak at digital game and library conferences and events; recently I presented in Monterey, Chicago and Seattle.
